In our classroom, we use a management system called Class Dojo. ClassDojo is a web based program which allows teachers to track students’ behaviors (positive AND negative) easily and efficiently. The program is based on points, and students can be given positive points for things like being on task, being respectful, participating, or working hard. On the other hand, points can be taken away if students are off task, talking out, or disrespectful.
On the site and app, students and parents are able to see how many points they have, which positive behaviors were noted, and which negative behaviors they need to work on. Weekly, students will be able to “cash in” on their points for different prizes and coupons at the Dojo Store. Parents will receive a behavior and skills report everyday to help you better understand to progress of your student's behavior at school.
One of the greatest features of ClassDojo is that it includes a messenger feature where teachers and parents can communicate openly and privately about student's progress, school happenings, and other classroom business. Teachers can send out messages and reminders to all parents at once or to individual parents.
Please check out the "Class Dojo" Website on the "Links" page to learn more about this awesome system and about how your student can be a part of positive behavior encouragement, a classroom economy, and monitor their own behavior!
Reflect & Refocus
Students get two reminders from the teacher for negative behavior such as distracting others, saying unkind things, not focusing on work, behaving in a unsafe manner, etc. On the third reminder students will be asked to fill out a "Reflect & Refocus" form.
The purpose of the form is not to embarrass, single out, or to make them feel bad about themselves, but rather for them to have a chance to stop, think over their actions, and reflect on how to manage the behavior better in the future. It serves as a pause and time for thinking before acting further.
Refocus forms are sent home to be signed by the parent to communicate behaviors and are to be returned to school the next day. I may communicate with you if somehow the refocus form hasn't made it's way back to me. As always, please feel free to reach out to me if the purpose of the refocus or situation was unclearly explained. I have the kids write the reflection on their own, only prompting when they need it.
